The 34 year old veteran starting pitcher Dan Haren continues to tell the Marlins he does't plan on joining their starting rotation next season. Haren admitted he was impressed by the direction the Marlins were headed, but it is clear that Haren wants to pitch closer to home. Haren said he wants to play for someone who has spring training in Arizona. The Marlins have done everything they possibly could to keep Haren, especially with all these moves to beef up their team.
The problem with Haren's request to pitch in the West Coast, for a team who has spring training in Arizona is there is only one team left, the Huston Astros. It isn't likely Haren gets traded to the Astros, and his future in the MLB next season isn't looking good. It is unclear what is going to happen with Haren, but if he is serious, then he won't be pitching in the big leagues next season. The Marlins would appreciate the veteran presence, and strength he would add to the back of a starting rotation.
The Dodgers included Haren in the blockbuster trade at the beginning of the offseason. The Dodgers offered to take 10 million off Harens contract this season, and another 10 million dollars in consideration cash. They would still get this cash if the Marlins were able to trade Haren, so in the end the Marlins truly lose nothing in this trade, and was worth the risk knowing he might retire. I hope Haren finds a home this season, because he has a lot of life in his arm, and would be to early for him to leave Major League Baseball.
