San Diego Padres
After years of being quiet, the Padres have made enough noise for the next few years. The trade with the Dodgers has gone through, and Matt Kemp has now joined the Padres. Even though it was revealed that he has arthritis in both his hips, the Padres went though with the trade. This is something that will effect Kemp later in life, when he is out of baseball. This is why they went through with the trade, because he is going to bring more to the team now. The next move the Padres made was for former Toronto Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow. Morrow has been a guy plagued with injuries, which is why he only have three solid seasons. Of those three seasons only one of them you could look at and say that you want that guy.
The trades were not done for the Padres, they made another with the Tampa Rays for Will Myers. After being traded to Tampa for James Shields, you think Myers would be their franchise guy. Instead, the Rays decided to trade him after he got injured for the entire 2014 season. Myers won rookie of the year in 2013, so his potential is there to be a next level player. The Padres are receiving catcher Ryan Hanigan and are trading him to the Boston Red Sox for Will Middlebrook. Mddlebrook's has shown that he can hit homeruns in the majors, but he can't hit for average. A new home in San Diego may give him a little extra incentive to work harder to keep a starting job. The Padres also make a move in getting catcher Derek Norris who played in Oakland last season. Great role piece for hitting, but he isn't the defensive catcher that you would normally want behind the plate everyday. The final move the Padres have made may have been their biggest of the off season. Justin Upton has been traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Padres this morning. This deal is not finalized yet, but should go through when it is all said and done.
The Padres have a great problem to have, which is way to many outfielders. With the three additions of Matt Kemp, Mill Myers, and Justin Upton that leaves Carlos Quentin, Will Venable, and Seth Smith in a tough spot. I expect the Padres to trade Seth Smith, for he is the only one with any value. The other two outfielders are in a tough spot, and could find themselves riding the bench are a stacked outfield. The Padres are clearly going for it all this year, not only because of the trades they made, but why they still have. After all three trades the Padres will manage to keep all three of their top pitchers Cashner, Ross, and Kennedy. This means they are going for it all now and why not? Their is one major problem this team can be facing in the future. Kemp, Myers, and Morrow have all dealt with injuries since they have been playing in the major leagues. Justin Upton will be a free agent after next season and if anything goes wrong he can leave. That means if Kemp or Myers goes down and they have a bad season Upton will leave and this will all be for nothing. It is a huge risk taken by the Padres, but they haven't been making any noise in past years. The Padres are all in next season with one of the biggest gambles I have seen in baseball in awhile.
