The Padres realizing that they have addressed the hitting, and now addressing the bullpen. The Padres recently acquired Kelley from the Yankees, and now have added Brandon Maurer from the Mariners for Seth Smith. This trade helps both teams out, but the Mariners more than the Padres.
Seattle needed to add that hitting, and outfield depth that Smith will bring. Smith is looking to split time with recently acquired outfielder Justin Ruggiano. Smith was one of the few bright spots of offensive on the Padres last year as he hit .266, with 12 home runs, and 48 RBI's. He wasn't a full time starter, and had some good numbers. He is 32 years old, and Seattle believes they could hang on to this guy for the next couple years. He grinds out good at bats, and brings a veteran bat to the lineup.
The Padres are getting a prospect that has struggle as a starter, but had success as a reliever. The Padres needed to address their bullpen after losing closer Huston Street. Maurer has a very high ERA as a starter, he went 1-4 with a 7.52 ERA in seven starts. As a reliever he had a 2.17 ERA, in 31 relief appearances. Maurer is only 24, the risk is low for he has time to develop if he is not ready for the bigs after spring training. They could use the Maurer that was pitching at the end on the season last year as a reliever for the season.
I believe Seattle gets the better end of the deal for they get a proven veteran bat for a guy that can't start, and hasn't been a reliever pond enough to know if he will continue where he left off. A.J Preller has been a stud this off season, even though I don't necessary like the move right now, it could end up paying off in the long run.
