Oakland has made its eighth trade of the off-season with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Tampa Bay
John Jaso
Daniel Robertson
Boog Powell
1.5 Million Cash
Oakland
Ben Zobrist
Yunel Escobar
This trade makes sense for both teams, and both teams get things they needed. Ben Zobrist fits the Billy Bean system perfect, being such a good utility player with a good WAR. He can play all infield and outfield position if necessary. More than likely Zobrist will play second base, and get some work in the outfield. Yunel Escobar is not known for his hitting, and plays a solid short-stop. Last season he had a down year hitting .258, 7 home runs, and 39 RBI's. He seems to be a guy that looses focus sometimes, and will go into some deep slumps. Hopefully Billy Bean can control him, and get him back on track. Oakland, in my eyes have not made their team any better, and I think it is a huge gamble to have so many new players on the team. The chemistry might not come as quickly as they like, because they lost a lot of people they had a good influence on the team. They will have to find new people to step up in their places.
Tampa Bay got a pretty good deal as well, adding a back up catcher in John Jaso, Oakland's number one prospect short-stop Daniel Robertson, and Boog Powell. They fill the void of the back up catcher, and free up room for Asdrubal Cabrera to play either middle infield positions. When Robertson is ready he will come up and take the reins at short-stop. Boog Powell is a versatile outfielder who can play all three outfield positions, but will probably remain in the minors for the time being.
