It seems like the Padres couldn't pass up on James Shields. I can't blame them, for Shields has been nothing but consistent since he has been in the league. In 8 of the 9 seasons James Shields has started more than 30 games. Also in 8 of those 9 years Shields has pitched over 200 innings and won double digit games. I honestly don't know why everyone is freaking out all the sudden that James Shields has pitched all these innings. He can obviously take care of himself, because he has never had a major injury like Tommy John in the big leagues. If I were the Padres reading off those numbers I would be thrilled that he was still out on the market, and could get a deal worked out.
If I were concerned about anything it would be the fact James Shields hasn't been a stud in the playoffs. He has a career record of 3-6 with a 5,46 era in 11 career starts. Those numbers would worry a little bit, but I would look past that for one reason. The reason is simply for the fact that James Shields will get you to the playoffs, even if he can't win it for you. In San Diego they have a pretty good rotation, and he won't be relied upon as much as he was in Kansas City. San Diego is aiming for a playoff berth, and James Shields is definitely the guy to help them get there.
