It might have only been the first day of baseball, but there was controversy and injuries already. First, Yodano Ventura leaves the game on Monday with an injury. Turns out that it was a minor injury on his right thumb, and shouldn't miss to much time, Royals fans can take a breath. Good news is the Royal destroyed the White Sox 10-1 with Alex Rios being the star on the day with three hits and one of them being a three run home run.
David Price picked up where he left off last season, and almost pitched a complete game shut out opening day. Price was one out short of a complete game shut out in his first game of the season. Price pounded the strike zone, and forced a lot of ground balls. I believe only two balls left the infield the entire game. Keep an eye out for David Price for he might be making another Cy Young Award possible this season.
The Rockies looked ridiculous again't the Brewers and Kyle Loshe. Everyone got in on the action expect for Justin Morneau. Tulowitzki had three hits, Carlos Gonzalez had two hits, Dickerson had two hits, including a home run, and the star of the day Arenado had three hits with four RBI's. The Rockies show their potential when their team is completely healthy. Enjoy it while it lasts, because it never does, even though everyone is rooting for a healthy Rockies team.
The controversy of the day was between the Twins newly acquired Tori Hunter, and Umpire Joe West. Tori Hunter had checked his swing, and on replay his bat clearly didn't cross the plate. Joe West without checking the first base umpires opinion, had called Hunter out on strikes. Hunter was furious, and as well he should, because that call is meant to be made by the first base umpire. Home plate umpires claim they can see a bat cross the plate from their angle. I find this hard to be true when pitchers are throwing so hard, and batters react so fast, I think it could be easily missed. Even if it were true and they could see the angle, the first base umpire has the best angle, and why wouldn't you ask the person with the best angle. It was opening day, and there will be mistakes hopefully this won't happen later in the season when teams are battling for a playoff spot.
